The problem. The enquiries arrive. The sales team says most of them are junk. The marketing team points at the lead count and says the campaigns are working. Both are describing the same account and neither is wrong.
What it costs the business
Bad lead quality is expensive twice. You pay for the click, and then you pay again for the hours your closers spend on people who were never going to buy. In a long sales cycle that second cost is the larger one, and it never appears in any marketing report. Worse, it corrodes trust between sales and marketing to the point where good leads get worked with the same low expectation as bad ones.
Why it is usually a tracking problem first
The instinct is to fix targeting. Narrow the audience, add exclusions, tighten the geography. That helps at the margin. But the platform is optimising toward whatever event you told it to value, and in most accounts that event is a form submission. So it goes and finds the people most likely to submit forms. It is doing exactly what it was asked. The brief was wrong.
Until the event you optimise for resembles a real commercial outcome, better targeting only makes the wrong population slightly more specific.
The approach we take
Qualify at the point of enquiry
The form is the cheapest filter you own. Asking for budget band, locality, timeline or what the person is actually trying to buy costs you some volume and buys you a callable list. Fewer, better enquiries beat a long list nobody trusts.
Verify before the lead reaches a human
Number verification and an automated first response separate real people from noise within the first minute, without a salesperson touching anything. It also means the genuine enquiries get a reply while they are still paying attention.
Feed the outcome back into the platform
Once you can tell a qualified enquiry from an unqualified one, send that distinction back as the conversion event. This is the step most accounts skip, and it is the one that changes who the algorithm goes looking for.
Score, then route
Not every qualified lead deserves the same response. Scoring on budget, intent and timeline lets the strongest enquiries reach your best closer first, which matters more than any targeting change you will make this quarter.
The outcome to expect
Lead volume will probably fall. Cost per lead will probably rise. Cost per qualified enquiry, contact rate and the proportion of enquiries that reach a real conversation should all improve, and those are the numbers that move revenue.
If your sales team has stopped trusting the enquiries, that is a system problem rather than a targeting problem. It is the core of how we build lead generation and AI qualification systems. Send us the last three months of enquiry data and we will show you where it is leaking.
